hey y'all, there's no huckleberry house gig in our near future, but matt comes home tomorrow and rehearsals start monday. neat, huh? i'm goin' to new orleans for the jazz and heritage festival in about a week and a half. cannot wait. goin with all my pals. the grand marshal Henry "Red " Griffin will be leading the parade in a southerly direction until we reach the crescent city and then he will continue his julie mckoy meets james brown role as our cruise director/buckjumper/king o' new orleans. ya haven't been 'til ya been with red. you can find me where frenchmen meets chartres at cafe brazil or in the gospel tent . i'm the guy with one hand full of ribs and one hand full of crawfish. have you checked out any albums by the new orleans klezmer all stars. funky jewish brass band music. went to the playboy mansion tonight for hugh hefner's birthday party. turned out one of my friends grew up in the mansion and he invited me. strangely intimate party. not small but not particularly big either. met hef. he was really nice to me . he apparently asked my friend to invite me. not really my scene , as you can guess, but it was definitely worth seeing before it fades away. it was beautiful there he has peacocks and monkeys and pinball and defender and donkey kong and pac man and matisse drawings and salvador dali paintings and gorgeous lawns and a really cool pool and THE GROTTO. a lot of his friends were there. these older guys. it was fun to imagine them all in 1960 living like james bond and telling the world how you should drink martinis and listen to quadrophonic stereo sound and read norman mailer and go see fellini movies and have sex and do drugs and think you're going to stay young forever. i'll bet they thought they'd be young forever. don't you? i do. and i'm not. anyways, they were all pretty nice to me. i hope they still feel young. it must feel weird to know all that time is gone and you can't get it back. they probably never expected that. i'll bet they go to that house and they have some really wild memories and they can't believe it's gone. i had a really wild childhood and that's a long way back for me but i can't believe some of the shit we did. and then to follow that up with all the stuff i'm living now. if this keeps up i'll have a hell of a life. i had a long talk with tony curtis. turns out he loves the band. how about that. he starts talking about mr jones and long december and hollywood and how it made feel and what it made him remember. i got a really weird life. tonight i appreciated it . it wasn't really my scene and i don't mean to glorify it too much because there's some stuff about it i don't really dig, but i felt like i got to be in another time tonight. it was unreal and i'm glad i got to do it. i'll probably never get that chance again and i'm glad i didn't miss it. see what you can before it disappears. go camping. go to a museum. visit the zoo. kiss a girl. do whatever. join a rock and roll band. and then don't forget. try not to ever forget. goodnight,
